Acupuncture is over 2000 years old. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that there are different channels of energy that run in meridians throughout the human body. When a person has a disease or medical problem, traditional Chinese medicine believes that it is due to an obstruction of a specific meridian.
Traditional Chinese medicine also believes that through the acupuncture needle, it may be possible to remove the obstruction of energy in the body and therefore allow energy or what is referred to as “qi” to once again freely flow through the meridians or body. There have been some studies which show that the use of acupuncture needles may stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the body. These chemicals may influence the perception of pain in such a way that one possibly may experience less pain.
Even though Dr. Cornejo has received medical acupuncture training, he uses acupuncture in his practice primarily for pain and musculoskeletal conditions. The World Health Organization has stated that following neurological and musculoskeletal conditions have shown to respond to acupuncture treatment:
• Headache and Migraine • Peripheral Neuropathies • Frozen Shoulder • Tennis Elbow • Sciatica • Low Back Pain • Osteoarthritis • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Back and Knee Pain • Fibromyalgia • Sports InjuriesFurther information may be obtained at: www.medicalacupuncture.org
